Spain Strengthens Suicide Prevention with a New Action Plan 2025-2027

A comprehensive strategy prioritizing care for vulnerable groups and intersectoral coordination

The Interterritorial Council of the National Health System has approved the Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2025-2027, a roadmap that expands and strengthens national strategies to reduce suicidal behaviors and improve institutional responses to this public health issue.

Led by the Ministry of Health, this plan establishes six key strategic lines to address suicide prevention from multiple perspectives:

-       Quality Information: Implementation of mental health surveillance systems to collect reliable data and improve action planning.

-       Awareness: Collaboration with media outlets to reduce stigma and promote responsible coverage of suicide.

-       Prevention in Vulnerable Groups: Targeted actions for high-risk groups such as adolescents, older adults, LGTBIQ+ individuals, and people in social exclusion.

-       Prevention Across All Policies: Integration of mental health considerations into educational, labor, community, and prison policies.

-       Healthcare Approach: Improvement in early detection and treatment of suicidal behaviors through clinical tools and specialized training.

-       Comprehensive Approach: Coordination among administrations and sectors to optimize responses to suicide and ensure accessibility to services like the 024 helpline.

Key Measures Introduced by the Plan:

-Creation of the Suicide Prevention Observatory, which will analyze data and guide intervention strategies.
-Strengthening of the 024 Helpline, a 24/7 support service for individuals in crisis and their families.

-Awareness Campaigns to promote mental health and suicide prevention among the general population.
-Journalist Training, providing updated guidelines and workshops to foster responsible reporting on suicide.
-Limiting Access to Lethal Means, through interventions at critical points and regulation of hazardous substances.
-Postvention Programs, offering support to relatives and close ones after a suicide loss.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that this plan places people at the center of prevention, prioritizing equity in access to mental health resources and strengthening the network of social and institutional support.

This strategy represents a decisive step toward a more effective and coordinated response to suicidal behavior, aligning Spain with international recommendations in public health and emotional well-being.
